As the Premier re-opens the debate over whether or not to abandon the twice annual time change the move is being welcomed by the Kamloops pair behind the campaign.
As the Premier fires off letters to the Governors of Washington State, Oregon, and California to test the time change waters Tara Holmes says while welcome she is also taking the news with a grain of salt.
“I don’t get too excited. I am not in denial that there is a lot of public consultation that they still want to go through. I think when things started changing was when California voted, it was in November. That is when Premier Horgan must have thought well okay if California, and Washington State also voted, and Florida is tabling this right now.”
Holmes says she still doesn’t understand what is holding B.C. back from conducting a provincial referendum so people can vote on whether or not to scrap time change.
“And especially timing in and around an election. They complain about lower voter turn out. They would have the highest voting turn out ever if there was two question on the ballot. The one question is are you in favour of stopping the time change? The second would be if yes what time would you like to stay on permanently winter or summer? Let the people of B.C. speak.”
Holmes herself advocates for DST, or summer time.
She says it would provide benefits to businesses, tourism, and get kids to school much safer.
Holmes says the Premier should be a leader on this issue instead of following what some U.S. states might do.
