Investigators with B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office are in Kamloops looking into a death in RCMP cells Tuesday night.
According to the IIO Kamloops Mounties took a man suspected of being intoxicated into custody Tuesday night.
Wednesday morning he was found dead in his cell.
Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald says his officers will determine if the death is a result of a direct or indirect RCMP action.
“We will examine for example the circumstances surrounding his arrest. We will examine his stay in cells overnight and what checks were actually made on him, and whether he had any signs of illness, and what if anything would have been done in response to that. There is usually a fair amount of evidence on that because cells typically have very good video systems so we can usually track the movements of the individual right from the moment he walks in to the moment he is taken out by EHS.”
MacDonald says an autopsy will be critical in determining a cause of death.
Three IIO investigators arrived in Kamloops on Wednesday.
He says the investigation could take a few months.
