The MLA for Kamloops South says frustration is growing among local governments as the wait continues on a legal cannabis revenue sharing agreement with the province.
Todd Stone says there is no question local governments will get a share of the legal cannabis tax revenue pie but there is no logical explanation for why it is taking so long.
“Our position all along has been that local communities, which bear a significant amount of the burden with this new regulatory system in place, absolutely need to have a fair share of the revenues that flow from the sale of cannabis. I have been talking to a number of mayors in my role as municipal affairs critic and there is growing impatience almost, certainly frustration, that it is taking so long.”
Stone says “there is no logical reason” for the talks taking so long.
Stone says the other factor is all indications are pointing to a lot less legal cannabis tax revenue flowing into government coffers than anyone anticipated.
He suspects that is because price points, taxes, and fees is driving legal marijuana prices well past what the black market can offer.
