The Chief of the Upper Nicola Band says his community is prepared for flooding after back-to-back years of evacuations.
Harvey McLeod says the First Nation has worked with the province to make sure resources are in place.
“It started on Sunday, we had a call from one of our members saying he needed a pump because water started to come in to the home. The flood preparation, and the teams that we need to engage with our communities and our citizens, it’s in place,” McLeod says.
“We’ve been having dialogue with the province to ensure the resources we’re going to need to protect and look after our citizens are in place. And of course with the experiences we’ve had in the past two years, we hope it doesn’t come but we’re prepared for it.”
McLeod says progress has also been made since the band signed an MOU on the Nicola Watershed with the province just over 12 months ago.
The First Nation between Kamloops and Merritt has ordered evacuations in the past two years because of flooding from the spring snowmelt.
