There could be a new BC Family Day weekend of sorts up at Sun Peaks Resort.
A number of ski resorts in the province aren’t happy with BC Family Day moving to the third Monday in February to coincide with the rest of the country, instead of the second Monday.
Sun Peaks Chief Marketing Officer Aidan Kelly says many ski hills are losing out on local skiers as a result.
“When the Family Day was on the second weekend, we were able to offer a day of skiing at 50 per cent off for all BC ski residents,” he said.
“We don’t have enough infrastructure to be able to pull that off on the new Family Day, so we’re looking at, ‘Hey, can we work something in potentially at another part of the year that BC residents can kind of own as well.'”
Kelly is hoping to bring back the many BC skiers who might have chosen to stay away this year because of the increased visitors from others parts of Canada and the United States.
“There’s only so much capacity and all of the resorts in the Interior and down on the coast, they are all full already,” he added. “We were sold out on that President’s Day Long Weekend because it’s also Family Day in Alberta and in Ontario.”
“If you are not on it early, you are paying a bit of a premium now with supply and demand. So I think there’s a lot of families who just weren’t able to take a ski holiday, and I think that’s a bit unfortunate.”
Kelly says they’ve spoken to a few other industry associations across BC, admitting that not everyone is open to the idea of another exclusive BC Family Day weekend.
There’s also no word yet if and when Sun Peaks Resort will create their own ‘weekend’.
The Tourism Industry Association of BC estimated the old BC Family Day weekend used to generate about $10-million for provincial ski areas.
