B.C.’s Forests minister is admitting climate change is the biggest change of all facing firefighters ahead of another wildfire season.
Forests minister Doug Donaldson says the last two wildfire seasons fires have been much more aggressive than what’s been seen before.
Donaldson notes this fire season, the emphasis will be on jumping on fires as fast a possible before they get too big and dangerous.
“That is why you are seeing the budget lift being put into more rapid response and more boots on the ground,” he said. “We are going to have increased initial attack crews.”
“Those are some of the methods we hope to use. We are looking at new technologies and new techniques. We used a mass water delivery system last year in fighting fires and that helped.”
NASA calls them fire breathing storms, or pyroCb, essentially wildfires with tornado like winds, spitting out lightning, and burning embers.
One of the largest ever recorded was in the 2017 Elephant Hill wildfire.
