Kamloops Search and Rescue is waiting for word to hear how much of the $18.6-million in SAR funding announced over the weekend will be coming their way.
Spokesperson Jenn Stahn says a committee is being struck between the B.C. Search and Rescue Association and Emergency Management BC, and two positions have been hired to determine how to split the money up.
One option, she notes, is the alternate support model.
“Basically it provides funding for each team depending on how busy they are, how big they are, and what their needs are specifically,” said Stahn, noting the money will not only fund searches.
“We are also looking at the fact training is a really big deal.” she added. “We weren’t sure what training was going to look like at a provincial level going forward.”
“All of our speciality training was basically up in the air. Knowing now that aside from what our individual team will get that we can also get that training that we are going to need going forward is huge.”
That said, she adds the $18.6-million is only over three years and a predictable long term funding model is still badly needed.
