The 101st parade at the Falkland Stampede will go ahead this Victoria Day weekend, after all.
A group of volunteers stepped forward at the eleventh hour, about a month about organizers cancelled the parade due to a lack of volunteers.
Rodeo Manager Melissa Churchill says the parade needs about a dozen volunteers the day of.
“It’s just to make sure that everyone is moving forward and we get everyone off the highway in time for our permit,” he said. “The main proponent is the head of the parade, so they are organizing starting now, taking applications from everyone who wants to be in the parade.”
“I’m surprised that it was a bit last minute so we had kind of lost all hope and then they decided a few weeks ago, that they can make it happen and we’re really excited about that.”
As for the permit to close the highway, Churchill says the government has agreed to issue it, at the eleventh hour.
“Luckily, they are just as excited about the parade as we are,” she noted, adding they still have to fit the parade into a 30 minute window.
“It’s still at tight timeline, but we’ve always done it in years past, so I’m sure it won’t be a problem this year.”
She adds they’ve had to move a few things around to accommodate the parade, which will now take place at 1 PM on Sunday, May 19.
Churchill says the reversal in decision was so last minute, that they were just able to add it to their event posters, which are being printed today.
