Kamloops RCMP say two people were taken to hospital after an Argo Road Maintenance truck was hit by a semi-truck late Monday night.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says police were called to the crash on Highway 5 at East Shuswap Road at about 11:50 p.m. on Monday.
“An Argo road crew was working in the southbound lane and had blocked the lane with numerous signs. A tractor trailer travelling south rear-ended an Argo crew truck, sending the truck over the bank with the driver inside,” Shelkie says.
She says both the driver of the Argo crew truck and the driver of the semi-truck were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The semi-truck driver was given a violation ticket as well.
“Kamloops RCMP asks all motorists to drive with caution at all times of the day. Spring brings more work crews onto the highways and it’s important to be alert to signs redirecting traffic. Remember to slow down and move over into another lane when passing emergency vehicles and work crews,” Shelkie says.
Derrick Power, the general manager of Argo Roads in the Thompson region, tells NL News the semi truck rear-ended the the Argo pick-up at nearly full speed, saying the driver didn’t start to brake until it was about 30 feet away from maintenance crews. He says the Argo truck was launched about 50 feet forward and 30 feet down an embankment, adding it was fortunate no one was hurt worse in the crash.
Our #Kamloops area maintenance contractor @Argo_Thompson was hit while properly doing traffic control for sweeping on Highway 5 this morning. We’re grateful the crew was not seriously injured. Yet another reminder to PLEASE USE CAUTION around roadside workers. #ConeZoneBC pic.twitter.com/OxUf9TFqfd
