Kamloops RCMP handed out 141 tickets last month for drivers using an electronic device when behind the wheel.
That’s to go with 16 warnings handed out during Distracted Driving Month.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says there are a few drivers that don’t seem to be getting the message to put their devices away.
“They are just choosing to do it,” she said. “Really, as a society, we need to monitor each other more and if you’re with somebody who’s using their cellphone, tell them that is not appropriate to be doing it while they are driving.”
“Monitor each other, and hopefully that use will go down and there will be safer driving.”
The Kamloops numbers pale in comparison to Vancouver, where more than 2,100 tickets for cellphone use were handed out last month, averaging out to 67 tickets a day.
As for seat belt infractions, there were 42 tickets and 7 warnings handed out last month in Kamloops.
“It’s a little disheartening, we’d like to see people putting away their cellphones, and not using them at all, and buckling up with their seat belts,” added Shelkie.
“For the use of electronic devices, that’s about average for what we give out for tickets.”
A bulk of the tickets issues last month came during a blitz on April 1.
Sixty-four were tickets were given out for people using an electronic device while driving, while 19 were for people not wearing a seat belt.
