On the issue of removing Land Title Office records from Kamloops to Victoria, the Premier is responding to frustration from area First Nations and the City that there was no consultation on the decision.
John Horgan says he will take the issue back to Forests Minister Doug Donaldson to make sure proper consultation is done and that no one is being deprived of access to the records.
“The objective here was to protect them and preserve them not to squirrel them away so that there was no access to them, quite the contrary,” he told Radio NL. “If those objectives are not being fully communicated then we are going to have to do a better job of it.”
“If there are other solutions that are going to come from community, then we will certainly look at those as well.”
Horgan adds he has every confidence that Minister Doug Donaldson will work with the mayor and council in Kamloops as well as area First Nations to make sure that the public is satisfied by the outcome.
The Premier is meeting with the Indigenous Leadership Council Monday.
“Well I am meeting with the Indigenous Leadership Council in one of our quarterly meetings. If it comes up there I will certainly address it. I will commit to you to take this back and talk to minister Donaldson one more time to see just where we are in terms of consultation and ensuring that people are not being deprived of these records.”
The City of Kamloops, Thompson Nicola Regional District, and area First Nations have all demanded any removal of those records be stopped and proper consultations done.
Despite the outrage the Land Title and Survey Authority posted the decision to remove the land title records from Kamloops on its website last week.
