The BC Wildfire Service says an uptick in grass fires near Kamloops in recent weeks has not been out of the ordinary.
Chief information officer Kevin Skrepnek says typically crews deal with grassfires early in the spring before a common stretch of wetter weather before the summer.
“Just given that it’s early in the spring, sometimes folks aren’t as cautious as they should be and things can take off on them. Not abnormal to see this kind of activity this time of year. We’ve even had seasons where this has been our busiest period; in 2016 our busiest months were April and May in that kind of early-spring grassfire season.”
According to the Wildfire Service website, there have been 11 fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre this year that provincial firefighters have had to respond to.
