The Premier is hoping for a very speedy turn around in a localized process to renew the forestry industry.
John Horgan says stakeholders in each timber supply area will be at the table to do the difficult work in hammering out an action plan unique to each area over the summer.
“We are avoiding, deliberately, the one size fits all model. Solutions in Kamloops are going to be different than solutions in the Mackenzie District or Fort St. John or a Prince George. Doing it timber supply area by timber supply area means that we are taking digestible bits and involving people directly mayors, regional directors, indigenous leaders, labour leaders, and CEOs. This is not going to be a junior level operation.”
Horgan says he is hopeful for a quick results.
“We are hopeful where people can come together quickly, address the problems, get them on the table, and then start sharing the solutions we are hoping that we can be getting into implementation sometime this fall. We got the summer, always a difficult time to get people together, but this is a pressing matter. People have known about the fall down in the annual allowable cut for some time. We know that beetle wood is now gone.”
He says the terms of reference should begin to filter out this week.
