The Shuswap Branch of the SPCA is in the process of building a new $4-million facility.
The biggest issue they are facing is finding a suitable piece of land, to build a new 5,000 to 6,000 square foot facility.
SPCA CEO Craig Daniell says it is to replace their existing location at 5850 Auto Road SE in Salmon Arm, with the new location ideally closer to the city.
“The city council has been really supportive in helping to identify some land for us,” he said. “Once we get that established, I think the project will move fairly quickly.”
In fact, once they get the land, Daniell says the entire project – including fundraising – could take just a couple of years.
“I’m hoping within three years, we’ll be celebrating in Salmon Arm the official opening of a new facility,” added Daniell, noting the Salmon Arm facility won’t be as big as the new Kamloops one.
“Certainly, we will be looking and expecting our provincial government to step up and continue to fund our facility renewal projects around the province.”
He noted the current Salmon Arm facility has many of the same issues faced by the old Kamloops location – an old and small facility that restricts the programs they can provide.
The provincial government chipped in $1.5-million towards the new $6.5 million facility in Kamloops.
