After a recent meeting with Kamloops city council, Interior Health says there are no firm plans to increase the number of detox beds in the city.
IHA West administrator of substance use and mental health Debbie Morris says there are currently 40 detox beds at two facilities Kamloops.
“We worked to provide a partnership approach so we will often fund some of the beds,” she said.
“We’ll provide services into the beds and so that in patient treatment when people need it just as part of the service connecting back in with our community programs, usually prior and after that treatment process.”
The Kamloops detox beds are accessed by people across the Thompson and Cariboo regions, the Okanagan, and even the Lower Mainland.
“We’re always kind of really looking at what the data is telling us in terms of what services we need,” she added.
“We recognize that often people are most successful in their treatment if they can really stay within their own community and in their own homes. that’s certainly something we are looking at right now.”
