Another busy ski season at Sun Peaks Resort is in the books, and it was a ‘good one, not a great one.’
That’s according to Marketing Manager Aidan Kelly, who is blaming some of the warmer winter weather this season.
The resort welcomed just under 400,000 skiers this season, that was a record number in 2018.
“We crept right up close to that mark and didn’t quite get to that number that we did last year, but were definitely still in that same ball park,” he said.
“All things considered for us here at the mountain, with how this weather went this winter compared to last winter, we’ll take it. It’s something we’re pretty happy with.”
Kelly noted that the warmer weather kept local Kamloops area skiers away towards the end of the season.
“When the weather really warmed up here in March, the golf courses started opening and people were riding their bikes,” he added. “The local market doesn’t come skiing as much as they would.”
“We also scaled back our operations for the last week, and that had a little bit of an impact, even though it was ironically some of the best skiing that we’ve had of the last six weeks.”
As for the next ski season, Kelly said he is optimistic that the resort can return to record breaking numbers once again.
“We saw an uptick in our Ontario business. The US market is always really stable for us, but the UK was a little tough this year, the economy is kind of struggling with Brexit,” Kelly added.
“Australia and New Zealand were really, really strong. And then we have emerging markets, you know with what China is doing. We saw some more Mexicans here this year, the list goes on and on.”
