Construction on Victoria Street West is forcing the Salvation Arm to temporarily move their mobile kitchen to 517 Tranquille Road on the Kamloops North Shore.
They serve meals twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday and were unable to find another suitable location on the South Shore.
Director of Community Services Tracey Thacker says they used to be located at 48 Victoria Street West.
“That parking lot is now being utilized for construction equipment,” she said. “Obviously, you can’t have pedestrian traffic or anyone in that area.”
“For the clients that we serve, some of them have mobility issues and they wouldn’t be able to get to our services in that area any longer.”
Thacker admits it might be harder for some clients to access these meals with the move.
“Some of our clients do come from the North Shore over to the South Shore and utilize our mobile kitchen, and it might make it easier for them,” she added. “But for others from the South Shore, it might make it a little more difficult for them.”
“But because parking is a large issue now downtown, so we just thought it would be best to move to the North Shore.”
Thacker says once construction is complete, the Salvation Army might consider a move back to a South Shore location.
