The mayor of Sun Peaks is preaching patience as the community plans for improving library service in the future.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District put $700,000 into a reserve fund this year for library service in Sun Peaks.
Al Raine says the municipality wants to address future plans for a new school before it gets to a library.
“That issue hasn’t been resolved, so we’re encouraging the TNRD to have patience while we try to address the planning issues that really are between the community and the school district.”
He says the community feels strongly that a library should be connected to a school. “Whether it’s located on a site adjacent or located on the same site as a school. With the school district, we have not yet addressed the issue of a permanent school. Although in the past few months there’s been quite a bit of discussion about looking at a permanent school site for Sun Peaks.”
The municipality will be meeting this week with the school district to discuss future planning for a school, however building a new school is likely at least several years away.
Raine says right now the “bookmobile” is the only library service that Sun Peaks has, which he says comes through the village every two weeks.
