The success of a new seniors housing project in Kamloops could lead to a new way of building homes for seniors.
The Oncore Seniors Society will operate 12 units of the 140 units in a new building that is under construction on St. Paul Street.
The Society bought the units with $2.25 million from the provincial government, and Vice Chair Mona Murray says they worked very closely with BC Housing to get the project going.
“They’ve made mention of that to us that they really like the concept,” she said. “Community Living BC likes the concept, and they suggested it might be something that we mirror in other communities or perhaps other parts of Kamloops.”
Murray had nothing but praise for the developers of the building – Total Concepts Development Ltd.
“It’s wonderful to have a developer to work with that understands sort of the process that you have to go to with BC Housing,” Murray added.
“BC Housing has been great to deal with, and it’s a new concept so there’s been lots of discussion and lots of meetings but it’s all been held very positively.”
In addition to the units managed by the Oncore Seniors Society, the building will have other residential units and commercial space, all of which is its own entity.
Construction is expected to wrap up next fall.
