There have been no flood issues to date in Cache Creek this season, after back-to-back years of flooding during the spring snow melt.
Mayor Santo Talarico says the community is staying vigilant, and has 3,000 sandbags on standby as well as rip rap rock to prevent erosion.
“I believe we have everything in place for an event, but mother nature always throws a curveball at you every once in a while. When you’re least anticipating an event, it happens. We’re trying to be ever vigilant that it could happen at any given time, and trying to be as prepared as possible.”
Talarico says Cache Creek itself and the Bonaparte River are flowing rapidly but not at unusual rates.
Last year at this point in the spring, the village was under a state of local emergency. Two years ago – nearly to the day – former fire chief Clayton Cassidy was reported missing, before his body was found later in the month after he had been swept away by floodwaters.
