The mayor of Logan Lake says the community is always concerned with ups-and-downs at the Highland Valley Copper Mine.
Teck Resources, the company that operates the mine in Logan Lake, reported a drop in copper profits of more than 40 percent in the first quarter of 2019, compared to the same time last year.
“It’s always a concern for us when they’re going through tough times, because what affects them affects us. They’re part of our community, they’re in our boundary. We all know that we’re hugely dependent on the mine for our tax base,” Robin Smith says.
“It’s one of those things that is cyclical, and they have ups and downs like any other resource-based industry. And you kind of just have to work your way through those tough times.”
Teck says it is expecting to gradually increase profits this year as it digs deeper and increases production with new equipment.
