BC Hydro is warning customers about a new twist on a scam trying to trick people into giving out their private banking information.
There have been dozens of complaints that people are getting emails that spoof a BC Hydro email address.
Spokesperson Jen Walker-Larsen says they are not sure how widespread the issue is just yet.
“We do receive reports that are customers have been contacted by email or phone,”she said. “Typically these customers are being told that their account is overdue or in arrears and they will be disconnected if they don’t make immediate payments.”
Walker-Larsen says BC Hydro doesn’t give refunds through Interac e-transfer, nor do they collect credit card or banking information by email.
“We’d like everybody to know that BC Hydro doesn’t phone or send emails about overdue accounts,” she added. “We send notices in the mail via Canada Post and you won’t suddenly just get a call or an email.”
She’s urging people to report suspected fraud to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501
