One of the biggest advocates for $10 a day child care is in Kamloops today hoping to gain the support of both the school board and city council.
Sharon Gregson will make a presentation to council today hoping Kamloops will be the 56th city in B.C. to pass a resolution to support $10 a day child care.
“So it is not putting council on the hook for spending any money,” she says. “It is really their way of signalling to the province, because it is mostly a provincial responsibility, that says we want you to continue to invest in and fix child care for families in our community.”
Gregson says Kamloops is not immune from child care woes.
“In Kamloops, I asked the local child care resources referral service what it was like for families to find licensed childcare here and she told me for infants it is almost impossible, for school age children it is a nightmare, and there is a little bit for space for three to five year old kids,” she added.
Gregson says some kids have to take taxis from their schools across town to the only child care spaces their parents could find.
There are two day cares being subsidized in Kamloops under the $10 a day model and Gregson points out the difference for parents there has been night and day.
