Kamloops city council has unanimously given support for a $10-dollar-a-day daycare.
Councillor Kathy Sinclair says making daycare affordable improves the livability of a community.
“When we as a council support $10-dollar-a-day childcare, it really is a non-partisan issue. And I think a unanimous decision shows that all members of council see the value in providing quality childcare that is affordable for families.”
Advocate Sharon Gregson had made a presentation to council asking for support. Kamloops is now the 56th city in B.C. to pass a resolution supporting $10-dollar-a-day daycare.
Gregson says two Kamloops daycares are subsidized under the $10-dollar model and says it has made a night-and-day difference, and Sinclair agrees.
“It just simply does not make financial sense sometimes for a parent to go back work when the cost of daycare is so high. It’s not because we don’t think daycare is important, but when you measure out whether it’s worthwhile financially, sometimes it just doesn’t make financial sense.”
