The City of Kamloops is likely to more than double tipping fees for septic waste sometime this year.
Utility services manager Greg Wightman says trucks have been coming to Kamloops from as far as the Okanagan and the Fraser Valley to bring liquid waste, because it is the cheapest place to do so.
“We’ve been comparing ourselves with places from really right across Canada, and in particular with our neighbours around here that have similar receiving facilities. And what we’ve found is that our rates are significantly lower than others in the area; we are around $20 dollars a cubic metre, which is 1,000 litres. The average for our neighbours around us is in and around $50 dollars.”
Wightman says when a report comes to city council at a later date, he expects the city will propose a new fee of around $50 dollars per cubic metre.
