A 55-year-old man is in custody after Merritt RCMP were called to investigate a sudden death yesterday.
Police found a 43-year-old man dead in a home in the 2200 block of Blair Street around 1:30 p.m. on May 9.
Sergeant Janelle Shoihet says it’s too early to say if the incident is a homicide.
“There are some earmarks that lead us to believe that he died [in a manner] other than natural causes,” she said. “However, there’s a lot of investigative avenues that have to be explored at this point, other than that it is suspicious. That being said, we never know what the outcome can be, and we’ll let the evidence lead us.”
Merritt RCMP and the Southeast District Major Crime Unit are investigating.
“When there’s any indication that anybody has died from any other means, other than natural causes, the Southeast District Major Crimes Unit are called in to assist,” Shoihet added. “Not only in those instances, but also to lend their expertise, because as a detachment, you have to focus on the calls that are coming in on a daily basis.”
Police are asking people who may have information to contact the tip line at 1-877-987-8477.
