It’s being called a new chapter in Canada lottery history as Lotto Max players will have two opportunities to see if they win….. or lose.
Staring this week, there will now be a draw on Tuesday’s as well as the regular Friday draw.
BCLC spokesperson Matt Lee says the main Lotto Max jackpot can now grow as large as $70-million.
“The odds are also relatively similar as well,” Lee said. “We’re actually adding another number so it’s 1 to 50, so as a result the odds will change slightly, but when you do the math, the odds of winning any prize will be 1 in 7 per $5 play. Previously it was 1 in 6.6 per $5 play.”
The cost to play will still stay $5 for three selections of seven numbers.
“We’re also adding two subsidiary prize categories and that’s now four plus the bonus and five plus the bonus, so that’s part of the reason why we’re adding an extra number to 50,” Lee added.
“That does change the odds a little bit but it also means the jackpot will have more time to grow.”
Lotto Max began in 2009 with the maximum jackpot at $50 million, which increased to $60 million in 2015. Since the launch, people across Canada have won over $11 billion, including 116 jackpot wins and 1,021 maxmillions prizes.
In B.C. alone, Lee said Lotto Max players have won $1.2 billion with 16 jackpot winners and 155 maxmillions. So far this year, he says $46 million in prizes has been handed out in the province.
As for how quickly can the jackpot reach that $70 million mark?
“Maybe 10 to 11 draws, and of course that depends on sales, and whether or not maxmillions get claimed as well. But you’re looking at maybe 4 or 5 times a year when it could hit that $70 million.”
The first Tuesday draw is today, May 14, with the jackpot estimated at $17 million.
