Kamloops RCMP are reminding people to not leave any valuables in your vehicles overnight.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says police are especially urging people to remove all garage door openers after an increase in the number of thefts in recent weeks.
“The warm weather seems to bring out more thieves walking the streets in the middle of the night,” she said.
“Over the past week, we’ve noticed quite a few more reports of thefts from vehicles where the garage door opener was taken, and then thieves were able to gain access to the garage and even into the house.”
Those reports included thefts where vehicles doors were left unlocked, where doors were locked but valuable were visibles, so a window was broken, and where a garage door opener was used to get into a house where other things were stolen.
Shelkie says every spring the RCMP tends to get an increase in the number of calls that reports of thefts from vehicles in Kamloops.
She pointed out that these types of crimes are preventable.
