The City of Kamloops has awarded a $4 million contract for pedestrian upgrades on Todd Road to Kamloops based BA Dawson Blacktop.
The project was identified as a high priority in the city’s 2013 Master Plan and again in the 2018 Transportation Master Plan.
Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says it will significantly improve safety on Todd Road, in the Barnhartvale area.
“It’s essentially road reconstruction from Ronde Lane to Klahanie Drive including the addition of a pedestrian sidewalk on the uphill side, a replacement of the utilities and reconstruction of the road in that area,” he said.
Crundwell says there will be pedestrian access through the construction zone, but vehicles will be limited to local traffic only with a single lane of alternating traffic. Residents in the area have been asking for these improvements for several years.
“More pedestrian access that connects to the school, so that’s the primary driver,” Crundwell added.
“We would have gone in there and reconstructed the road and replaced the utilities, I mean they were at the end of their life but through that process we are improving the pedestrian connectivity of that road as well.”
Construction is set to take place from Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m to 5 p.m., with work at night or on the weekend as needed.
Kamloops Bus Number 17 will be rerouted between lower Lamar Drive and upper Lamar Drive, starting May 21, but there won’t be much impact to the school buses that run in the area.
Construction should get underway sometime this week, and wrap up by September, and you can get updates from the city here.
Below is a summary of the work being done by the city:
- constructing a raised concrete sidewalk (uphill side)
- installing concrete curbing (downhill side)
- maintaining intersection widths
- installing a crosswalk on Todd Road near Ronde Lane
- improving bus stops
- repaving the road
- installing additional lighting, where possible
- constructing retaining walls, where required
Repairing the sanitary sewer, installing a new water main and water services, replacing a pressure-reducing valve station, and installing a piped drainage system will be done in conjunction with the road project.
