As Sun Peaks Resort gets ready for what could be a busy summer, resort officials are keeping an eye on the conditions right now.
It is extremely dry in the Sun Peaks area, with a moderate fire danger rating, with similar conditions in the Kamloops area.
Marketing Manager Aidan Kelly says all staff at the resort go through fire training courses every spring.
“And we do refreshers for returning staff,” he said.
“New staff that come in, they go through a full two day course and we make sure that all our trucks and equipment and everything are outfitted with the tools and resources to help kind of get a handle on things if anything does spring up on this side.”
Kelly says they also keep a close eye on weather patterns and other activities that go on in the mountains.
“We do limit and restrict things like capital construction and projects and things like that when we need to, based on the conditions,” Kelly added. “It’s not always great for business, but there’s bigger factor issues at play here in terms of you gotta be a good steward of the land.”
Sun Peaks has had it’s share of run ins with wildfires, and after two record wildfire seasons in B.C., Kelly says they want to what they can to prevent flare ups in the area.
“We don’t want to see anything like that repeated,” he said.
