The federal NDP candidate for the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding say she’s saying ‘no’ to the Trans-Mountain pipeline expansion at this point.
Gina Myhill-Jones says issues on sustainability with the proposed project have not been addressed.
“It’s the same with any type of project that carries with it a substantial environmental risk. It also carries a substantial financial liability risk with it as well, if you have the risk to communities, if you have the risk to watersheds. That all needs to be looked at before you have anybody saying absolutely yes or absolutely no.”
Does she think the riding in general supports the pipeline?
“I hear, to tell you the truth, probably an equal amount of ‘we want to see it, and we want to see it now.’ And those people who absolutely want it stopped at source and no more pipeline at all.”
Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh continues to avoid saying yes or no to the proposed pipeline expansion.
The other two candidates in the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding – incumbent Conservative Cathy McLeod and Liberal candidate Terry Lake – have both voiced support for the Trans-Mountain project.
Myhill-Jones will be acclaimed as the NDP’s candidate for the riding on Sunday, with nomination meetings in 100 Mile House, Clearwater and Kamloops.
