A plan for an outdoor school in Chase is still being considered, according to the Board Chair of the Kamloops Thompson School District.
Kathleen Karpuk says there was a delegation of parents speaking about the benefits on an outdoor school at the last board meeting which was held in Chase.
She says SD73 staff will now be looking into the feasibility of an outdoor school.
“So there’s a lot of things that have to go into the background and as well as having a really appropriate outdoor place where they can learn that’s got plants, and rocks, and pine cones, and all those wonderful things that make outdoors special for kids,” Karpuk said.
There is no timeline for when that report will be ready, as Karpuk says staff have a lot to consider including a suitable location.
“Even though the kids spend the majority of the day outside, they do have to have some structures around in case of adverse weather events,” Karpuk added. “They need to have washroom facilities, they need to be somewhere where we can have first aid if necessary. They need to have some admin support.”
This is the first proposal for an outdoor school within SD73 that has come before the board of trustees.
