There is no answer yet from B.C.’s Housing Minister on one recommendation that remains outstanding from a rental housing task force struck in the province.
Selina Robinson says she needs more information before she decides whether or not to strike down a strata’s ability to restrict or ban rental units from a complex or building.
“Well, we committed that we would address all the recommendations. There were 25 in total, and this was one of them was to not allow restrictions in rental units,” she said. “We need to do more consultation. There is still some work that we need to do.”
“We want to understand if we move in that direction what would the implication be? What are some of the concerns? We need to do a more full-some consultation and that is the work we are doing right now.”
Robinson says it is really important to understand all the implications especially from both renters and owners who are prevented from renting due to strata restrictions.
She says there is some overlap with the speculation tax noting the current two year exemption for owners of a second home who are unable to rent due to strata rules.
