A First Nations consortium is hoping to get a response from the feds next month in regards to their proposal to buy a stake in the Trans Mountain pipeline.
Speaking on NL Newsday, Whispering Pines First Nation chief Mike Lebourdais points out the House of Commons rises on June 21.
“What we want from them is some kind of commitment before the House rises to address our First Nations jurisdiction. We want to buy a chunk of this pipeline so we can enjoy the environmental oversight and enjoy the equity in the pipe. So those are the kind of things we want from the feds. And again, that’s just a matter of getting in front of the ministers who we need to get in front of.”
Does he think the fall election could impact any pipeline sale?
“No I don’t have any fears about that. I already have conversations with other parties that are involved in the elections. Whether or not the House will rise in three weeks, I’m not entirely sure. They have a whole sweep of legislation that needs to get passed. I wouldn’t be surprised if Parliament stayed in a little longer.”
Whispering Pines is part of a consortium of First Nations that have been planning to buy a stake in the pipeline.
