The Kamloops Conservative MP says she’s concerned tensions between China and Canada could impact a Chinese-owned seniors home in the Tournament Capital.
Cathy McLeod says the Kamloops Seniors Village was bought in 2017 by a Chinese holding company called Anbang which the federal government approved.
However since then, Anbang’s founder was sentenced to 18 years in prison for fraud and the company has been taken over by the Chinese government.
“What we’re looking at, is the Canadian government has a responsibility to reassure us. When they allowed this sale to go through they said there was no problems, and I think we deserve reassurance that indeed there isn’t.”
McLeod says she has heard no specific issues from the level of care at the Kamloops Senior Village, but says she wants to know that people’s data there is protected.
She says relations between Canada and China are at an all-time low, citing the detainment of two Canadians in China as retaliation for the house of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, as well actions to deter Canadian pork and canola producers.
