The MLA for Kamloops-North has introduced a private member’s bill hoping to make it mandatory for gas stations to post a breakdown of all the taxes per litre of gasoline.
Peter Milobar says he is hoping to create a standardized system in the province.
“There’s a variation across both provincial and the federal and municipal side of things,” he said. “I just think having that standardized sticker out there would be a benefit for the consumer. It would ease a bit of confusion about what people are actually paying in taxes at the pump.
Milobar likens the idea to a restaurant bill that shows liquor taxes, GST and other fees, or a property tax bill that shows the various levels of taxation.
He says the taxes differ based on when you are in the province.
“Something like the TransLink tax down in the Lower Mainland is totally different than say the provincial fuel tax,” Milobar told NL. “In the rest of the province, we pay about 6.77 cents a litre in one fuel surcharge and the Lower Mainland actually pays 1.75 cents so you know there is variation across both provincial as well as the federal and municipal side of things.”
Most British Columbians pay 40 cents in taxes per litre. It is 46 cents in the Victoria area and about 52 cents in Metro Vancouver.
Milobar’s bill was given first reading in the Legislature this week.
