Now that the final report from the inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women has been released, our local MP says what’s needed now is a national action plan.
As far as the Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo region goes, Cathy McLeod points out the 31 unit housing project being built on the North Shore of Kamloops specifically for indigenous youth and elders is a start.
“We can even look at it with pride in Kamloops, when people were at that ground breaking ceremony. Where youth who are transitioning out of care, we know they’re particularly vulnerable and we’re creating the residence, the facility where, or the home where they’re going to be sharing it with the elders. So, that’s an example of of Kamloops doing something that I believe is going to make a difference.”
She adds that on Monday, all parties agreed to pass child welfare legislation, an area McLeod says has failed first nation’s people far too often.
