The Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s film commissioner recognizes there is a lack of local options for film training.
Vicci Weller says it would be ideal to have more training available in the Kamloops area.
“The unions and government, even the film commissions, are all trying to work collaboratively to bring about good apprenticeship programs that are not arduous, or are easy for people to get into with not so many barriers.”
That said, Weller says when it comes to film employment there are people who live in Kamloops and work in Vancouver, which she compares to people working on the oil patch who go where the work is.
A film expert in Kamloops has said the area needs between two to three thousand more trained film workers to meet the demand for industry members looking to film in the region.
