It is a big weekend for the Kamloops Film Society with the reopening of the Paramount Theatre downtown after about eight weeks of cleanups and some renovations.
The theatre will have a soft opening on June 14 and 15, and Film Society Executive Director Dusan Magdolen says there will be three movies each night, part of their ‘Best of the Fest’ series.
“We’re taking our three best films from our March film festival, one because they were great films and not everybody got to see them, but two to put a stamp of our vision for this space,” he said. “I mean, we’re going to play all kinds of films, but we wanted to start with something that’s very much us. We’ve got an indigenous film, we’ve got a BC film and we’ve got a foreign film.”
Those movies include This Mountain Life at 6 p.m., Sink or Swim at 6:15 p.m., and The Grizzlies at 7 p.m.
Magdolen tells NL the Society will start small, but they plan to screen movies every day of the week as soon as possible.
“It will just depend on our audiences coming out, what’s working, what isn’t working and so it’ll be some experimentation, but we’ll be open Friday and Saturday moving forward now,” he added. “It’s just been a ton of change, we’re most of the way there, but you know step by step. thekfs.ca is our new website, and its got the movies up there now.”
As for the renovations, it went mostly according to plan.
“You know there’s always going to be things that you are not sort of ready for, but for the most part, we’re there,” Magdolen said. “Like our point of sale system, we’re still using Eventbrite for this weekend, but hopefully by next weekend, we’ll have our new point of sale system up and going.”
“We’re also going to figure out how exactly we’re doing our shifts – what time are they starting, who’s doing what, that sort of things.”
Magdolen also told NL that plans are still in place for a grand opening later this fall.
