A Kamloops councillor says the city is still on the sidelines as fundraising efforts pick up for a Performing Arts Centre.
A non-profit group of industry members has been formed to spearhead a fundraising campaign for the facility.
Bill Sarai says the city supports the proposal, but is waiting for a business plan before it commits taxpayer money.
“We’re losing a lot of acts and plays and concerts that hold that mid-size venue. It’s something that this council is going to have to dig down and do a lot of homework on. To see who’s coming to the table and how this is going to be managed, who’s going to be running the building, who’s going to be occupying the building, who’s going to be using the building.”
A performing arts centre is currently estimated to cost more than $70 million.
Meanwhile, local business people Ron and Rae Fawcett have offered to donate land downtown and at least $8 million dollars to a performing arts centre.
