A Kamloops city councillor is reminding residents to be careful with an increasing wildfire risk around the Tournament Capital.
Arjun Singh took to social media as the Fire Danger rating across the area ranges from moderate to extreme.
“Obviously, we’ve had an evacuation centre recently, we’ve had wildfires smoking,” he said. “I just would really encourage people to think about any activity that could cause a spark or any wildfire smoke that could potentially start a wildfire.”
Singh was speaking after attending a meeting on emergency management on Thursday.
“It’s heartbreaking to realize that the Elephant Hill fire in 2017 was caused by human activity so I’m really hoping that people will be really careful because one wrong move can cause a world of hurt and I’m concerned about that happening again this year,” added Singh.
The BC wildfire service outlawed Category 2 and Category 3 fires across the Kamloops Fire Centre on Wednesday to prevent human-caused wildfires.
At the time of posting, the BC Wildfire Service says there are 49 active wildfires across the province, with 27 starts in the last two days.
Of the 302 fires to date this year, 41 per cent are suspected human caused.
