The mayor of Kamloops is welcoming a pledge from Ottawa to ban the use of all single use plastics by 2021.
Ken Christian says one national policy would be much better than a patchwork of local government bylaws sprinkled across the country.
“I think that this is a great move and since we had the discussion that Councillor Dale Bass brought forward that we referred to administration, I’ve heard from a couple of large corporations that say they would prefer to have a nationwide or at least a province-wide approach to plastics,” added Christian.
“If you have companies like a London Drugs or a Canadian Tire and that sort of thing, you don’t want them to have a certain product in Quesnel and a different product in Cranbrook. I hear that loud and clear from those large corporations.”
As for the motion from Councillor Bass for the city to ban plastic bags, Christian says it will come back before council in July.
He says it is being studied by city staff as they study best practices elsewhere.
