We will get a look Thursday at the report by the Premier’s special liason into how to save B.C.’s endangered mountain caribou.
Premier John Horgan, Forests minister Doug Donaldson, and former BC Liberals MLA and now special liaison Blair Lekstrom will release the report Thursday morning in Vancouver.
Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier says he was told on Tuesday and will be watching the announcement closely.
“The Premier did commit to me two weeks ago at the end of session that probably within the next week discussing Blair Lekstrom’s recommendations with cabinet. I have received a call actually just as of yesterday saying that we are going to get a briefing tomorrow from the ministry staff on the Lekstrom report on what the findings and recommendations might be.”
Bernier says he is hoping what ever is in the report will help save the caribou while not reigniting tempers.
“It was a good political move on the Premier’s part because definitely by putting Blair Lekstrom as a local Councillor and former MLA as a liaison to give advice it kind of calmed the waters temporarily. But it also gave uncertainty because there was no commitment from the government that they would actually follow through with any recommendations. So there is a lot of questions still out there.”
Blair Lekstrom, a former BC Liberals MLA, was asked by Premier John Horgan to step in and complete the report to defuse tensions in the Peace region over a lack of caribou consultations.
