Kamloops city staff will be planning where to install a rainbow crosswalk in the downtown core.
Council voted has unanimously to ask staff to do so, after a request came forward from Kamloops Pride.
President Sam Numsen says the organization is open to a number of locations for the crosswalk downtown.
“If you put it in a really high-traffic pedestrian area, that’s really where you’re going to see most people really see it and enjoy it. Hopefully really think critically about what it means to them to be a diverse community, that welcomes LGBTQ2S+ people. So we’d love it kind of on the main drag – on Victoria, on Seymour or on Lansdowne, somewhere kind of in there,” he says.
“This is something we’ve been hearing for years. The community would like to see a permanent rainbow crosswalk in the downtown core. It really is a celebration of the diverse identities we know exist here in Kamloops. The LGBTQ2S+ community is one that is growing but it also growing in visibility.”
Numsen says there are several rainbow crosswalks on private property in Kamloops but none on a public city street.
City staff estimated the crosswalk would cost about $10,000 dollars to install. A report on from staff will come back to council to be voted on at a later date.
