A Kamloops councillor says she was shocked to see first-hand how much waste is produced in Kamloops.
Kathy Sinclair says she and the rest of council were given a tour this week of the Emterra recycling processing plant in Valleyview.
“I used to think of recycling as not garbage, but really it’s all waste. It was a big wake-up call to see how much plastic, how much paper we’re going through. We really have to think more carefully and think about reducing this in the first place.”
Meanwhile, the city now plans to fine people who continually and flagrantly put recycle garbage, as it tried to cut down its contaminated recycling.
“As city staff have stated, it’s not for oops I accidently put a plastic straw in once in a while. It’s for those repeat offenders, it’s for people who are putting coffee tables, couches, you name it in recycling bins, we’ve seen it all. Folks who are flagrantly not doing the right thing,” Sinclair explains.
