The BC Wildfire Service is encouraging people to be aware of the risk of wildfires ahead of the long weekend.
Information officer Kyla Fraser says people should be careful with their own fires, check for any fire bans and report any wildfires.
“Even though it seems a little wet or dreary outside… Certainly all the signs are there pointing that we may see a busier-than-usual summer, so no reason to get complacent just because things are a little cool right now,” Fraser says.
“I think any long weekend, lots of people have the weekend off, they want to head out with friends and family, go camping, go hiking in the backcountry. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, because you do have more people out there. There’s more risk of potential wildfire starts, but also more eyes out there for people who can report wildfires to us.”
As of time of posting, there were no campfire bans or back country restrictions anywhere in B.C. Some open fire bans are in place in regions of B.C., which can be viewed here.
