While the leader of the officials opposition maligns the Employer Health Tax, he is also admitting a Liberal government might not get rid of it.
Andrew Wilkinson says if the BC Liberals win the next election they will immediately launch a review of all the taxes introduced by the NDP government.
“We are going to have to have an overview of that. I cannot say today we will abolish the employers health tax because the NDP have raised the cost of government so much it is irresponsible to say we are just going to abolish all of their 19 taxes,” he said.
“We are going to have to have an overview of what they have done and how much cost they have run up before we can come up with a revised taxation plan.”
Wilkinson says the review would include all small business and property taxation while scrapping the speculation tax, and restoring the revenue neutral component to the carbon tax.
He says the cuts by Victoria Police are just one example among many of the impact of the employer health tax.
However, Premier John Horgan is simply not buying that the EHT tax is behind service cuts by Victoria Police.
Premier Horgan says the city is looking to cast blame on someone else.
“I’m quite happy to have the city of Victoria blame the province for the management of their budgets, but we have eliminated Medical Service Premiums for citizens of British Columbia, the largest single tax cut in BC history for the middle class and we’ve shifted to the Employer Health Tax which is similar to jurisdictions right across the country,” Horgan said.
He notes his government is being scapegoated by city hall while the opposition Liberals are jumping on.
