From livestock producers to canola farmers, the trade dispute with China has put a stranglehold a lot of Canadians.
Since the arrest of a Huawei executive, relations between our two countries have gone steadily downhill with everything from Canadians being held on trumped up charges to the boycotting of Canadian food products.
Senior Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, Dr. Sylvain Charlebois thinks it’s not just about the Meng Wanzhou, but the Chinese trade war with the United States is playing a big part. “There’s a Chinese proverb that actually suggests that in order to scare the monkey you need to kill the chicken.”
“Well, guess who’s the chicken? It’s Canada and the monkey, of course, is the United States.”
Charlebois thinks the Chinese aren’t done yet and figures their next target could be Canadian seafood.
