A property owner in Heffley is concerned about trains constantly sitting on the tracks and blocking road access.
Herman Hothi has a family farm on Haslett Road, and says that road is the only exit point for multiple farms and homes.
He says he has been in contact with both CN and Kamloops city staff.
“It’s an inconvenience yes, but it’s a huge safety concern. What do we do if somebody is on the other side and they’re stuck? There’s no emergency services, there’s no emergency road. And when I ask them (the city) what if there is an emergency, their answer pretty much is we’ll deal with it then. It doesn’t seem like there’s a plan in place, and if there is they’re not willing to sharing that,” Hothi says.
“It’s classified as a private crossing, right? My question to the city is – I’m still waiting for an answer – how do you guys define a private crossing and a public crossing, and what factors do you guys look into? They didn’t give me a straight answer, but it’s not a private crossing. There’s public out there, there’s workers, industry. So for them to say private, I want to know what they classify as private.”
Hothi says the CN trains usually block the road for between 30 minutes and two hours.
