As the province solicits more feedback on daylight saving time, the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce is firmly in favour of doing away with twice annual time change.
Executive Director Acacia Pangilinan is glad to see a good response to the province’s online survey so far, which ends on July 19.
“The business community has been quite vocal on it and we’ve been working on this file for a number of years and helping that Stop the Time Change group get their petition out and then bringing it to the BC Chamber of Commerce and to the provincial government,” she said. “It’s exciting. We’re seeing some progress and some movement.”
Pangilinan says Chamber members are also concerned about workplace wellness which can be affected by the time change.
“There can be different implications of that like you know you might get a paper cut, or you might bruise yourself at the workplace, but it might be bigger mistakes like you didn’t shoulder check or you didn’t do a pre-trip check on your piece of equipment,” she added.
“You know those are types of mistakes that could injure people in the workplace and those are what the business community felt was really important that we brought that forward.”
And she notes it can be a lot worse if people have children.
“Especially if you are trying to pack lunches and get them to bed and maybe you are dealing with homework and school, that time or that window is shortened and then you as a parent aren’t able to provide as good as you want to, or you can so there’s lots and lots of implications from the time change. It’s way bigger of an issue than people make it out to be.”
Pangilinan is urging more people to speak out in favour of scrapping the time change on the province’s online survey which ends on July 19.
